A democratic socialist state would not involve hierarchy because everyone would have equal opportunities at the beginnings of their lives.

The goal of socialism is anarchism. Socialists simply do not believe we can leap from capitalism to anarchism. It's far more likely that would just create a new form of feudalism--which is why right libertarians like the idea, of course.
