According to Haaretz (https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/.premium.MAGAZINE-slave-owners-confederates-and-wrestlers-jews-of-the-u-s-south-in-the-showcase-1.9928841), the talking point is that Jews controlled the slave trade, which is bullshit. However, that does not change this:

"The relatively high proportion of Jewish slaveholding was a function of the concentration of Jews in cities and towns."

Several years ago, I saved this note without saving its source, and googling today isn't bringing it up, but the books mentioned are real:

"3. In the South before the Civil War, the 1860 census showed the total number of US slaveholders was 393,964, which was "3.2 percent of the total Southern population" according to Keven C. Julius in The Abolitionist Decade, 1829-1838. The South's Jewish population was only 20,000, but "about 5,000 Jews owned one or more slaves" according to Junius Rodrigues in The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery."

If you don't know about Judah P. Benjamin, I highly recommend reading about him. He served in three different positions in Jefferson Davis's cabinet.
