Asians have always fit awkwardly in the US racial system. During Jim Crow, they went to white schools, used white facilities, and were never subject to miscegenation laws, yet it was understood Asians might become romantically involved with either whites or blacks, while those two groups were not supposed to mix. So I'd say Star Trek's record stands.
