At least one of Bell's black critics has said his early legal work was excellent. And I can agree that the early race reductionists are more forgivable than the later ones—class did not begin trumping race until late in the 20th century, and there are still areas where racism is a statistical factor even after you account for class. Maybe teaching at the Ivy League was just bad for Bell. :)
