Atheists are interestingly complex. I would argue that some come in a fairly straight line from Unitarians, so they could be considered an ethnicity. Some come from other traditions, of course. The Unitarian-Universalists deal with that by using hyphens a lot. Someone could be an atheist-Buddhist-UU, for example.
