Groups that form around ideas aren’t inherently identitarian, so long as the ideas themselves aren’t identitarian, as with the Klan or the misnamed New Black Panther Party. Universalists recognize that we have different interests. The question for universalists is whether groups are inclusive or exclusive, and if exclusive, whether the reason for exclusiveness is based on something objective like skill or subjective like social identity.
