I agree some of the details probably are exaggerated, but I haven't heard that any of the leaders tried to stop the killings or, if the Lehi testifiers are right, the rapes, so it might've been planned--I suspect they interpreted the massacre as fulfilling Plan D. Given the parading of victims afterward, they certainly weren't ashamed.
