I have thought some more about whether hate crimes like the people killed at the Tree of Life synagogue are lynchings. They are not. Lynchings are carried out by mobs, and if the suspects go to trial, they are found innocent because the community either agrees with them or is afraid of them. A hate crime carried out by an individual who is then shot by the police or is arrested and sent to prison is not a lynching.
