I understand the desire to cast this as a racial thing, but Prince’s first success was in Minneapolis, which is 60% “white alone” today and was certainly more white when Prince took off. I think there’s a simpler reason: Prince was always willing to buck the music establishment, and the music establishment hated him for that. That most important explanation is one you offer: “he didn’t give a fuck.”
