I'm not sure how I feel about being an example, but I'm glad you wrote this. I don't want to go back to look at the discussion I was in, but I suspect you're right about the reason I dropped it. When people are really upset about something I think they misinterpreted, I try to clarify, and if that doesn't work, I tiptoe away.
