Latin was spoken by the educated for many years too. That doesn't mean either were living languages.

An awful lot of people seem to have bought ben Yehudah's self-aggrandizing propaganda, especially since he had to invent a lot of words for modern times, something that would not have been necessary had Hebrew been a living language.
