Stevens is fine if you want to see how a privileged black woman understands racism in Europe. If you want to look for the underlying reasons, you're better off reading Malcolm X or Adolph Reed or Barbara Fields.

I agree there are still racists in the US. But if you want to understand why the racial statistics of poverty have not changed since the 1960s, you have to look at class mobility. If white privilege was a factor, there would be a smaller percentage of white people in poverty today, yet there is not.
