That was Du Bois's argument for using colored instead of any of the other respectful terms of the time. The fact remains that "colored" was an accepted term for many decades. Du Bois certainly didn't think it excluded black people.

Yes, racism is still strong in the Union's poorest state. But someone could've taken that doctor to court in 1986.
