The difference is that Israel began stealing land from Palestinians in 1948 — hardly ancient history. If Palestinians weren’t suffering today, no one would care, but clearly, they are suffering. Am I wrong to think there are still Muslims alive who have a claim to land that Israel has seized?

I agree people can use language imprecisely, but that does not mean we should abandon terms that are meant to be precise. What alternative is there to Zionist?
