The legal definitions changed over time. Before 1680, the only difference between a slave and indentured servant was the length of enslavement. Slaves and indentured servants lived together and rebelled together, which is why laws began to change after Bacon's Rebellion. Remember that the Irish were involuntary indentured servants before 1680.
