The point of many of these movies is to provide a bridge for audiences that identify with the straight actor. The movies may be silly, but their point is that the identity that is being portrayed is as valid as the actor’s “real” identity in the movie.

I put “real” in quotes because for actors, there is no real identity. There’s only the role.
