The question is not whether men and women live different lives in tribal societies. The question is whether they're seen as equals despite their differences. Though it's dated in many ways, I highly recommend Engel's The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State.

I suspect we're moving toward something more complex than a matriarchy, but we shall see.
