The traditional definition of privilege is wealth. The word literally means "private law". It refers to the ability of the rich to buy better treatment than the rest of us. It made sense for Du Bois to speak of white skin privilege during Jim Crow because people of the same class were treated differently due to their physical appearance then. It makes much less sense today, when Appalachian Americans are poorer than Black Americans.
