We agree that writing alone does not change the world. My point is that Wells and Du Bois wrote exhaustively about horrible things done during Jim Crow. If gator babies were more than an urban legend, why did they ignore them? Obviously, it was as much a part of pop culture as the idea that Jews ate Christian babies.
