"White-passing" is problematic because it implies race is real. You can't pass for a social construct. Either you fit the construct and strangers think you are part of it, or you do not fit it and strangers think you belong to a different social construct. The impossibility of creating a precise social construct is why, during slavery and Jim Crow, the definition of whiteness varied from state to state.
